Dealing with Homesickness

Keep in regular contact with your friends and family at home - arrange a day or particular time for them to call you.  Keep in contact with other BEI students in America

Keep busy!!  Do anything and join everything!  Go out and mingle as much as possible “all work and no play makes Jack/Jill dull”

If you have tried your best and things aren’t working out with a roommate – change your roommate, if possible!

Allow yourself to feel homesick - it is part of the transition process

Avoid comparing the new environment to home - it’s just different

Plenty of rest, food, exercise, and socializing!

Keep a journal.  It will be interesting to look back on

Don’t think about the end of the year or how far away it seems, just keep in focus everything directly in front of you.

Make the most of your time in the USA

Don’t quit!!!!!

Talk to others in your position. Their support and wisdom will make things seem

very different.

Try to be positive. What makes you want to cry today will make you laugh

tomorrow

Expect change

Accept differences, learn to open your mind and embrace the unfamiliar
