Would you like to become a Modern Language Assistant in Northern Ireland?

Are you a native speaker of French, German, Italian or Spanish? Would you like to assist with the teaching of your own language at a school in Northern Ireland? If so, read on.

Who manages the programme?

The British Council manages the Modern Language Assistants programme and facilitates the placement of students to a wide range of institutions throughout Northern Ireland. This year, 132 assistants from 11 different countries were appointed.

How does the programme work?

Modern Language Assistants appointed to Northern Ireland are contracted to work for a nine-month placement from 1 September – 31 May. The timetable can vary from a minimum of twelve hours to a maximum of eighteen hours per week. Placements often involve working in more than one institution.

Modern Language Assistants are expected to work with the class teacher and whole class or on their own with small groups of students. Their role is to help students to develop their language acquisition by delivering a range of activities in a fun and informative way.

In return, Assistants have the unique opportunity of living and working in Northern Ireland, gaining an insight into the education system, developing their command of the English language and acquiring an understanding of the country’s complex history.

The rate of allowance for 2009-10 is £859 gross per month. In Northern Ireland, Assistants are paid by their school or by their appointed Education and Library Board:

Assistants from metropolitan France may apply for a 2nd year. Notes on how to apply will be posted on this website early in 2010.

Will I have support?
