Challenge Europe gets underway with inaugural event

Addressing the problems of climate change and global warming, 21 young Europeans took part in this dynamic event held in Dublin this June, kick starting the first year of Challenge Europe, the European element of the British Council's global climate programme.  Moving through four areas, ‘awareness’, ‘agency’, ‘association’ and ‘action’, the 21 participants explored the island of Ireland in the context of climate change, began to think about the challenge, and agreed action points for the next step of the project.   More ...  

Ordinary Lives Project moves to Brussels
Lucie SoukupovaThe Ordinary Lives project explores stories of European migration through the eyes of 18 young people living in or moving to Northern Ireland, describing the experience of arrival and departure, the people met, and those left behind. Their fascinating experiences have been captured in text and photographs. Working with our partner OFMDFMNI, Ordinary Lives, first seen in Belfast, moves moves to the European Parliament, Brussels, in early September.  For more information contact Emily Wilcox.
Transatlantic Network 2020
Transatlantic Network 2020 is a major new British Council initiative aimed at strengthening ties between Europe and North America.  Targeting early career professionals aged 25-35 with future potential to shape society, the programme focuses on the sharing of experience and knowledge with events organised around key global challenges facing Europe and the US.  
TN2020 will hold its first one week summit, jointly hosted by British Council Northern Ireland and Ireland, between 28 September and 3 October 2008.  The event will begin in Belfast and move to Dublin.  Approximately 100 participants will come together for a week of inspiring and memorable visits and debates.  Why not get involved? The official launch took place in Berlin 16-19 March 08 and involved 30 participants from across the UK, Europe and North America  . A compilation of ‘think-pieces’ that we commissioned from writers and journalists across Europe and the US were unveiled:  Mary Fitzgerald of the Irish Times gives the Island of Ireland perspective.  
Two local authors take part in Edinburgh International Book Festival
We are pleased to announce that local authors Glenn Patterson and David Park will feature in The Bookcase, our biennial showcase for contemporary British literature, taking place from the 14 - 18 August 2008 at the Edinburgh International Book Festival.  The programme will offer readings, performances and discussion from a wide range of established writers and emerging authors from the UK, with opportunities for interaction among participants.  For further information contact Colette Norwood.
Young Apeldoorn Conference, Belfast October 2008

This successful conference series comes to Belfast in October, providing a forum for young people to discuss important issues affecting Anglo-Dutch and European cultural, political and economic relations over the next decade. More information on the conference

Mock Council of the European Union
Schools are invited to register for the annual Mock Council of the European Union, to be held on Friday 17 October 2008 in the Long Gallery, Parliament Buildings, Belfast.  The event is aimed at 16-18 year old pupils with an interest in European affairs or politics and lively debate.  To get a feel for the event, watch last year's webcast.    More details and this year's application form   
Global Xchange, international volunteering programme, officially launched

Global Xchange was officially launched in Newry last month.  International volunteers from Mombassa aged 18-25 will stay with host families in Newry and surrounding areas, working in community placements and helping to form lasting friendships.  Volulnteers from the Newry area will then repay the visit.  More .....

Fresh from representing Northern Ireland and Ireland at this year's Venice Biennale, Willie Doherty and Gerard Byrne are exhibiting at Belfast's gtgallery until 23 July.  This exhibition celebrates the participation of Northern Ireland and Ireland in the 52nd Venice Biennale.    The Exhibition Team for Northern Ireland at the 2009 Venice Biennale has just been announced.   More ....

Lives Entwined III - New book of essays on Anglo-Irish relations launched

'Britain & Ireland: Lives Entwined III’ is a new book of essays exploring the complex web of relations that exist between Britain and Ireland. Commissioned and published by the British Council, it follows two successful volumes of the same name published in 2005 and 2006, and the 2004 report Through Irish Eyes exploring changing attitudes towards the UK among young Irish people.
