Networking for change

If you are working in the civil society sector, or have an interest in the governance of Nigeria and community building, you may want to get involved with one of our projects or programmes; all of which, promote and encourage development through various networks and professional partnerships. We call this work Networking for change.

What we do
Our mission in Nigeria is to portray the UK as a modern and diverse society: committed to strengthening democracy and human rights; seeking to improve access to education and educational resources through dialogue and partnership with Nigerian practitioners, policy makers, and civil society groups. The strength of our networking is demonstrated by our successful bids to manage the DFID-funded Access to Justice programme and the DFID-funded contract to provide technical assistance to the Universal Basic Education Project in Nigeria, as well as the EU funded Nigerianet.

Who we work with
We support essential change in access to democracy, education, health, information and other basic rights using our vast experience in the field of networking and influencing reform. Our focus is on strengthening the capacity to influence and effect change by improving access to information, tools for advocacy, and capacity enhancement. Within this, we focus on our networks in the legal sector. Our 2004/5 projects will focus on information sharing (through e-resources) and relationship-building between Commonwealth National Human Rights commissions and government, the media, and non-governmental organisations.

When and where do we work
We work on different projects with different developmental organisations and donor agencies. Our work with these agencies is largely to deliver services to the people. Our projects and programmes include: Universal Basic Education, Nigerianet, Africawoman, Access to Justice, Nigeria Governance Fund (NGF), and the Economic Management Capacity Building Project (EMCAP).

Through the Commonwealth Human Rights Commission, we also support the Nigeria National Human Rights Institution, and Nigerian civil society organisations, to effectively promote the values of democracy, good governance and respect for fundamental freedoms in the Commonwealth.
