Corporate Social/Governance Responsibility

The Government of Nigeria and African sub region in line with one of their main interests presently is pushing forward the Corporate Social Responsibility agenda. Concurrently, this also coincides with the ISO 5 key objectives and action plan for developing countries. It ranges from awareness through capacity building to national and regional integration.

British Council’s CSR/CGSR initiative has therefore been created to support the Government in achieving this applauded goal.

In February 2006, British Council organized a stake holder’s forum on Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) to improve awareness of the role of standardization in economic growth, world trade and sustainable development.

The forum also focused on developing and encouraging corporate citizenship and social responsibility in collaboration with Standards Organization of Nigeria (SON), Equality Foundation UK and the UN Global Compact.

In November 2006, British Council in collaboration with Standard Organization of Nigeria, Prince of Wales international Business Forum, Wales, UK, United Nation Information Centre & Lagos Business School had a 3 day training at Lagos Business School (LBS).

The training was focused on capacity building of ISO members and stakeholders involved in developing the standardization infrastructure in Nigeria, as well as strategic Corporate Social Responsibility and 1 day forum on Corporate Governance and Social Responsibility to develop strategies on increasing national and regional cooperation and to share experience.

It is British Council’s desire that stakeholders would sustain and fully implement the agenda, thereby contributing immensely to the overall socio- economic, and human capital development of Nigeria and sub Saharan Africa for full participation in the global economy.
