Africa 2007: Belongings

Belongings

Africa 2007

Belongings

Belongings is one of five regional projects that together constitute Africa 2007, a three-year regional programme in East, West and Southern Africa. The programme aims to explore notions of culture and identity to generate fresh ideas and create new understandings between individuals and communities in Africa and the UK.

The policies of the British government in recent years, NEPAD, Commission for Africa and the G8 have all highlighted the need to continue to examine and improve the relationship between Africa and other countries and to challenge stereotypes based on old development models that assume dependency and need. Africa 2007 was developed with these policies in mind.

Aim

Belongings aims to develop leadership in young people by exploring culture and identity to promote intercultural dialogue, generating shared understanding between individuals and communities in Africa and the UK.

Scope

The project duration is three years, ending in 2009. It involves approximately 400 young people (18–25 years old), half from East and West Africa and half from the UK. It involves at least 11 countries, including the UK. The participants will take part in two-week, structured exchanges. There will be a number of essential activities pre- and post-exchange that will take place in home countries.
