Connecting Classrooms allows for intercultural dialogue through three-way partnership programmes between schools in Sub-Saharan Africa and the UK. Each partnership consists of three clusters of three schools from the UK and two different Sub-Saharan countries. The project aims to increase knowledge and understanding of each other’s societies, through joint curriculum projects.
The programme aims at reaching millions of young people in both the UK and Africa. Although it focuses on teachers and the community at large, its key target is mainly young people in the primary and secondary schools between the ages of 5-19. Currently in Nigeria, primary and secondary schools in different regions of the country are involved in the programme, working on curriculum projects on environment, culture, drama, mathematics, etc.
The programme aims at improving the perceptions of young UK and African people of each other’s cultures.
•Train young people in leadership skills
•Challenge Stereotypical misconceptions
•Form long lasting partnerships based on mutual respect
•Sharing of expertise locally and internationally
The partnership focuses on a specific curriculum area with projects being undertaken jointly across partnerships. The scheme provides funding to facilitate exchange visits, and to meet other costs associated with the programme.
