Editorial page editor emeritus and columnist for the Toronto Star, Canada’s largest newspaper, he has covered or supervised coverage of Canada for 40 years, and reported from nearly 50 countries, including the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan, Iranian revolution, conflicts in the Middle East, etc.
He has been Managing Editor, The Brandon Sun, Man., and at The Star, News Editor, National Editor and Editorial Page Editor.
He is a recipient of the Order of Canada, the nation’s highest civilian honor (for advocating “fairness and equality of opportunity in our pluralistic society);” Order of Ontario (for helping to redefine Canadian identity); an honorary doctorate from York University (for “helping in the creation and sustaining of a contemporary Canada);” and several journalistic honors.
He is the author, among others, of Being Muslim, on post-9/11 Islamophobic politics, based on his travels in North America, Europe, the Middle East, South Asia and the Far East.
