Erik Bleich is Professor of Political Science at Middlebury College in Vermont. He has written numerous scholarly articles on race, ethnicity, and policymaking, and is the author of The Freedom to Be Racist? How the United States and Europe Struggle to Preserve Freedom and Combat Racism (Oxford University Press, 2011) and Race Politics in Britain and France: Ideas and Policymaking since the 1960s (Cambridge University Press, 2003).

His work on Muslims includes his edited volume Muslims and the State in the Post-9/11 West and articles and book chapters defining the concept of Islamophobia, tracking responses to the Danish cartoon controversy, and examining how speech about Islam and Muslims has been regulated by European law. He has contributed opinion pieces for Vermont Public Radio and the Guardian and has appeared on France 24.
