Across the Atlantic: Islam, the West, and the Repercussions of 9/11

Panelists at Johns Hopkins

On November 16, 2011, Our Shared Future, the Institute for Social Policy and Understanding, and the Johns Hopkins University's Center for Transatlantic Relations hosted a panel discussion at Johns Hopkins on the impact of 9/11 on the United Kingdom, Europe and the United States.

Our Shared Future Opinion Leader Dr. H.A. Hellyer, Senior Analyst at the Abu Dhabi Gallup Center, discussed his latest policy brief, "Across the Atlantic: Islam, Europe, and the Repercussions of the Attacks" with fellow Opinion Leader Dr. Jocelyne Cesari of Harvard University and Our Shared Future Advisory Board member Dr. Hussein Rashid of Religion Dispatches and Hofstra University. Sharon Memis, Director of the British Council in the USA, moderated an engaging and lively discussion.

The panelists grappled with questions of Muslim and immigrant identity, European and US domestic and foreign policy, public discourse on Islam and elections and related issues. Panelists emphasized the need to change the perception of Muslims as the "other" in both American and European societies, and all agreed that conversations with, rather than about, Muslim communities will be needed to change public perceptions (and misperceptions) of Islam.
