Career development
Academic career pathways can be different from country to country, even within Europe. LERU, the League of European Research Universities, has developed academic career maps to give an indication of how researchers can progress from doctoral studies to professorship, and the type of positions available.
The maps show the different research positions available in an institution, the levels of responsibility, how they are funded at each stage and how a researcher may progress from one level to the next. There are maps available for 9 European countries, including the UK, and these can be accessed here.
