Russian Arbitration Court ruling announced in Moscow

17 / 10 / 2008

The British Council can confirm that the outcome of the court hearing in Moscow today indicated a reduction in the tax bill. The details are complex and we are reviewing the judgement with our lawyers.

The British Council received a tax bill in May 2008 in respect of its cultural relations activity for 2004-06. This bill was the result of a tax inspection during 2007. In line with common procedure in Russia, we challenged certain elements of the bill which we considered incorrect.

The British Council has continued to work throughout this year in Moscow. We hope to make progress in discussing a Cultural Centres Agreement with the Russian Authorities and that in the future we can expand our cultural and educational projects to include partner organisations and people in the regions of Russia.

The British Council is registered for and pays tax in Russia and has complied with all requests of the tax authorities in respect of its activities. We work globally on a not-for-profit basis.
