Sector Advisory Groups

The sector advisory groups were set up in May 2007 and replace the former sector advisory committees.

The groups were set up in line with recommendations made by the Board of Trustees following an external consultancy on the advisory function in 2006. There are currently three sector advisory groups in:

The sector advisory groups operate within a wider advisory function that includes the advisory board and the country advisory committees. In addition, there are a number of advisory panels, particularly in Education.

Purpose and objectives

The functions of the sector advisory groups, as set out in their TOR, are to:

  • comment on opportunities, trends and issues of long-term strategic importance for the British Council
  • support the British Council in developing large scale global initiatives by acting as a sounding board and by stimulating new ideas
  • provide up to date information on major developments within the UK and help the British Council establish contact with relevant individuals and organisations
  • act as advocates of the British Council in the UK
  • participate as appropriate and required in supporting specific British Council projects/initiatives

The advisory groups serve a useful role in the development of products/projects but particularly at the early, brainstorming stage of project development.

The advisory groups help us to link advice on UK trends and opportunities with our regional priorities overseas and stimulate new thinking. The groups operate as think tanks for the British Council.
