INDIE: Inclusion and Diversity in Education
The Netherlands

The Inclusion and Diversity in Education (INDIE) project unites policy makers in the field of Education and Inclusion with head teachers and ‘young leaders’ – (pupils drawn from participating schools) from eleven European countries: Belgium, England, Germany, Greece, Italy, Malta, the Netherlands, Portugal, Scotland, Spain and Wales. The four Dutch schools participating in INDIE come from Arnhem: Olympus College, Lorentz Lyceum, Arentheem College Middachtensingel and Arentheem College Thomas a Kempis.

Young Leader Training
The first training sessions in the Netherlands were organised in January 2008. Under the guidance of professional trainers, Kees Hoogendoorn, Femke Gordijn and Yvor Boer, the Young Leaders learnt to develop ideas and express them to others through a three-day training session in their schools. Young Leaders from Olympus College and Lorentz Lyceum had the chance to meet as well as pupils from Arentheem College Middachten and Arentheem College Thomas a Kempis. All pupils had the opportunity to debate on the subject of inclusion and diversity and to develop their skills in communication and team working. At the end of the training session, pupils voted for one delegate from their school to go to the Brussels Conference as their representative. Tristan Braackman from Middachten, Zana Atasoy from Olympus, Anne Twaalfhoven from Lorentz and Chantal van Eyck from Thomas a Kempis were the lucky ones. Accompanied by their teachers, Janine Wijn from Middachten and Bas Oosterinck from Olympus College, our four Young Leaders arrived on Tuesday afternoon, for an appointment at the Huis van Nederlandse Provincies in Brussels. After their official visit, they checked into Youth Hostel and learned more about what was waiting for them the following three days…
More about the Brussels Conference

A second training session involving new Young Leaders from the same schools is organised in all countries during the autumn of 2008.
The Netherlands Young Leaders Training dates are as follow:
22 to 24 September 2008 with Arentheem College Middachtensingel and Arentheem College Thomas a Kempis (Click here to read the article)
24 to 26 November 2008 with Olympus College and Lorenzt Lyceum

Cluster meeting
The four schools in the Netherlands are linked to four schools in Cardiff, Wales and five in Baden-Württemberg, Germany. Their Cluster Meeting took place in Amsterdam on 17 and 18 April 2008. Representatives from schools in the Netherlands, Wales and Germany met to finalise the in-school projects they feel will best put the European Youth Charter on Inclusion and Diversity into practice.
