The British Council co-funds and administers a series of research partnership programmes linking UK-based scientists with their opposite numbers in key countries across Europe. Early career researchers from a whole spectrum of scientific disciplines are in receipt of grants. Funding is provided in the form of grants-in-aid towards the costs of international travel and accommodation for collaborative research visits or for organising a collaborative workshop/seminar. In recognition of the value of international co-operation in academic and scientific research, a collaborative academic research programme was established between the Netherlands and the United Kingdom in 1990. After seventeen years of working with NWO, the British Council now has a new partner; as from 2008 the UK-Netherlands Partnership Programme in Science will be jointly run and financed by the British Council and Platform Bèta Techniek. As from September 2008, the British Council and WBI/FNRS jointly run and finance the Partnership Programme in Science, United Kingdom (UK) & Communauté Française de Belgique Wallonie Bruxelles (CFB-WB). The aim of this Partnership Programme in Science (PPS) is to enable early-stage and talented postdoctoral researchers from higher education institutions in the two countries to meet, exchange ideas and engage in scientific and academic research collaboration. The above mentioned partnership programmes fall under the larger British Council Research Networks project. As part of this initiative, we are brining added value to teams that have competed successfully for funding under the bilateral programmes by developing activities responding to the needs of researchers embarking on an international scientific career. We do this by organising Training Workshops assisting early career researchers with their career planning. Two training workshops have already successfully taken place; one in Paris in February 2008 and the second in Lisbon in December 2008. You can download the article about the Training Workshop in Lisbon. The next training workshop will take place in Bonn from 9 to 11 December.
