DNA from the beginning
Cold Spring Harbour Laboratory website illustrating the basics of DNA, genetics and heredity. Interactive website with the basic principles, problems, illustrations and animations. Organised into topics, with varying degrees of complexity.
DNA interactive
Dolan DNA learning centre (Cold Spring Harbour Laboratory). Well organised site with resources for teachers and student worksheets.
A particularly suitable activity is the DNA controversy topic, where students must pick a controversial statement, research it using the internet and present a number of scientific arguments for and against.
Alternatively the ‘Genome, a tour and genetic disorder brochure’, where students are again required to research a particular genetic disorder and produce a brochure dealing with different aspects of that disorder.

Has a wealth of information and resources specifically for teachers and students on the impact of humans on the environment. Organised into easily accessible topics, targeted at different age ranges, with background information, problems and possible experiments.
Millennium Ecosystem Assessment
International programme to assess the interaction between humans and the ecosystem, and identify key problems and possible solutions. Contains comprehensive and in-depth reports on the changing ecosystem and how it affects human well-being.

Enables you to calculate how much of the earth’s resources you need for your daily life, and compares this to other people in different parts of the world. Only takes a few minutes and may surprise you, shock you, or make you think.
