Through a training programme Dreams + Teams uses sport to develop young leaders, enhancing their citizenship skills and promoting intercultural understanding. The international dimension of the initiative adds an extra edge and allows room for new ideas as well as building lasting friendships between countries. Find out more about Dreams + Teams activities around the world.
In the Netherlands the programme is managed by the British Council, the UK Youth Sport Trust and local schools. Together, the partners run training courses for teachers who then train young people to act as Young Leaders and organise sports festivals together. The Dreams + Teams project in the Netherlands is unique, as the training is attended by an international (UK and NL) group of teachers and students.
By running sports events for hundreds of young people these Young Leaders are challenged to:
- demonstrate leadership
- be active citizens in their community
- value and promote cross-cultural understanding
Dreams + Teams encourages the Young Leaders to work with their international counterparts via e-mail, video conferencing and face-to-face contact, bringing an international and cross-cultural understanding to everything they do - thinking globally while acting locally.

Dreams + Teams International Young Leaders are an inspiration to work with. Many have never had the opportunity to take responsibility for managing an event of this kind; may never have met their international peers or travelled out of their countries before. But they respond to the international challenge of Dreams + Teams with commitment, imagination and idealism.
