The Chronicles brings together six up-and-coming writers and translators from the Netherlands and the UK. With creative writing and translation as the vehicle, they will enter into a dialogue on language, understanding and identity.
Such an intimate exchange is unusual between writers and translators, but why is that? What exactly is the relationship between the two? How does contact influence the work of the translator? What is lost in translation and what is gained? How does the translation of cultural differences impact upon the relationship? These questions and more will posed to our participants during The Chronicles.
The four young writers Hassan Bahara (NL), Priya Basil (UK), Crista Ermiya (UK) and Niels ’t Hooft (NL) together with the translators Rhian Heppleston (UK) and Krijn Peter Hesselink (NL) will go to London where they exchange ideas, write and translate during workshops about the theme ‘On Being Translated’. They will also perform in a public reading in the Poetry Society and the group will visit the Sebald Lecture 2007, an annual lecture about the art of translation, this year given by Marina Warner (prize-winning writer of fiction, criticism and history). Before the lecture, Sir Peter Stothard (Editor of The Times Literary Supplement) will present the 2007 Translation Prizes amongst which the Vondel Prize for translation from Dutch.

This intensive four-day meeting between the writers and translators serves as a prologue to Crossing Border festival, where the six Chronicles’ participants will be fully immersed in the festival as writer/translator-in-residence, where they will write or translate a column daily about their experiences. All these bilingual columns written during their stay in London and in The Hague can be read on the weblog of the Crossing Border website. The writers will also perform live at the festival and daily at Crossing Border café at 5 pm in Teatro Cuatro
