If pigs could fly!

This workshop looked at different activities to practise Conditional structures in the classroom.  All of the activities are appropriate for secondary school students.  Download the materials and adapt them to suit the needs of your learners.

Materials:

First and Second Conditional - Warmer:  Change Your Seats

  1. First Conditional - Chain Drills
  2. First Conditional - Matching Activity
  3. First or Second Conditional – Discrimination Activity
  4. Second Conditional - Dilemmas Card Game
  5. First and Second Conditional - Speaking Boardgame
  6. Zero, First, Second and Third Conditional - Sorting Activity
  7. All Conditionals - Speaking Questionnaire
  8. Third Conditional - Sunita’s Morning

There are some simple notes  on the form and use of the basic four Conditional forms.

ZERO CONDITIONAL

  • Used to talk about cause and effect. If X happens, Y is the result.

EG If you mix red and yellow, you get orange.

FIRST CONDITIONAL

  • Used to talk about possible future situations, which the speaker thinks are probable.

EG If it rains, she'll go by bus.  She won’t walk.

  • Used to talk about imaginary future situations which the speaker thinks are possible but not very probable.

EG If I saved 20 lakhs this year, I'd start building a house.

Used to talk about unreal situations in the present.

EG If I were you, I'd join the Learning Centre at the British Council.

  • Used to talk about past situations that did not happen.
