In 1972 I studied at the British Council English School and passed the Cambridge Proficiency. Then in the early 80s, as I graduated in English and started teaching it, I had a close pedagogical contact with the British Council through library services, panel discussion, teamwork for the creation on the English Ecole National Superieure section in Rabat (1981). The British Council Library has been a great asset for teachers and students. Panel discussion, art exhibits and visits of important personalities have allowed me to meet people such as Prince Charles and Richard Demarco who organised the Edinburgh Festival. I have always kept a fruitful give and take contact with the British Council and its personnel through giving poetry reading and lectures. Thanks to the very cooperative team of the British Council, I experienced two major cultural events : In 1995, my participation to the Beijing Conference was financed by the British Council. It allowed me to present a research paper entitled : "Signs and Sounds of Maghrebi Women".
In 2001, the British Council put me in contact with Arts UK- Ltd for a writing residence on Hadrian's Wall area for a project called "Writing on the Wall". UK has always been a literary dreamland for me. A pen pal sent me a picture of the Beatles when I was 12. I've been speaking the language for 40 years; landing therefore, in the country that produced Milton, Shakespeare, Shelley, Blake, the Bronties, Dickens, Eliot and more... What a joy ! I love British people's freedom of mind and their keen sense of humour. |
