Erasmus Study Abroad

What is it about?

Are you at university and interested in spending 3-12 months studying in another European country? If so, Erasmus is the opportunity for you.

Where can I go?

There are 32 other countries that take part in this EU programme. Your Erasmus university representative will have a list of partnered European universities.

What does it cost?

You will not be paying your host university any fees.

Erasmus students also receive a grant that currently ranges from €275-€375 a month for 2013/14, depending on the country you visit.

Erasmus grants in the UK are paid through your home institution and are paid in addition to the standard grants or loans to which you are entitled. There are also additional grants for students identified as eligible for the various widening participation premiums already operating at HE level across the UK and for mobility to priority countries.

It is worth noting that if you are eligible for student support in the UK and study abroad with Erasmus for one whole academic year, you may also be eligible to receive a large contribution towards your UK tuition fees for that year.

It may also be worth looking at our sister site UK-Students Abroad for some guidance on Erasmus funding.

Am I eligible?

First make sure you are studying at a higher education institution that holds an Erasmus Charter. Secondly also be sure to check that you are studying a recognised degree or other recognised tertiary level qualification (up to and including the level of doctorate).

If you are taking a short-term higher vocational education course, such as a foundation degree course or you are a part-time student, you can also participate (providing you study full-time during your period abroad).

What is the availability and deadline?

You can usually apply to Erasmus every term, however deadlines and availability vary between universities. Please contact your Erasmus university office to find out which deadlines apply to you.
