British Council Mexico
Programa British Council Formador de Facilitadores PNIEB

The British Council is conducting a pilot English Teacher Training Cascade programme called “El Programa British Council Formador de Facilitadores PNIEB” in which we work in partnership with the government of the State of Mexico as well as our corporate partners, HSBC and Televisa.

The aim of the project is to train 350 teachers and turn them into Formadores who will in turn train 17,000 English teachers (Facilitadores) of kindergarten, primary and secondary as well as teachers from teacher training colleges. Those 17,000 teachers will in time use this knowledge to assist the learning of English of around 800,000 children. All of the Formadores have been chosen because of their high level of English and/or experience in teaching.

All of the teachers we are working with, Formadores and Facilitadores, are part of a nation wide project to improve the standard of English teaching in Basic Education called Programa Nacional de Ingles en Educación Básica and forms a national syllabus for the teaching of English. The programme was created to fill a huge gap in the labour market as many of the states of Mexico are finding it very difficult to train the vast numbers of teachers they need for the national syllabus and it was based on the successful similar project in India, Project English.

Based on the success so far of the pilot, we aim to work with several states across México and currently the states of Nuevo León and Veracruz have expressed their interest in being part of the programme

The pilot consist of:

Developing a methodology and training programme particular to México based on the national curriculum (PNIEB).

Training 350 teachers to become Formadores and 17,000 teachers to become Facilitadores

Helping around 800,000 students in their development of the English language

Creating a nationally recognized certification programme for the Professional Development of English language teachers
