Certificate in Advanced English

The Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English (CAE) is an exam in English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL). It is an advanced exam, set at Level C1 of the Council of Europe's Common European Framework for modern languages. Although the level of language skills required is not as high for the Cambridge Certificate of Proficency in English, CAE recognises the ability to communicate with confidence in English and deal with most aspects of everyday life.

At C1 level, typical users can:

  • read quickly enough to cope with an academic course taught in English
  • take notes in English during lectures or meetings
  • contribute to meetings and conversations discussing abstract or cultural subjects
  • produce clear, well structured and detailes pieces of writing
  • express themselves well, with a good degree of fluency
  • use English flexibly for social, professional and academic purposes

What does the exam involve?

CAE has five papers:

Each of the written papers is returned to Cambridge for marking and assessment. The Speaking Test is conducted by two locally based examiners who examine you face to face. All examiners are accredited by Cambridge ESOL.

You need to be able to understand a range of texts, including how they are organised and the opinions and attitudes expressed in them. The  texts will be from sources such as newspapers, magazines, journals, books (fiction and non-fiction), promotion and informational materials, etc

•Writing (Paper 2) 2 Hours

  • Use of English (Paper 3 ) 1 Hour 30 minutes

Your use of English will be tested by taks which show how well you can control your grammar and vocabulary

  • Listening (Paper 4) 45 minutes (aprox)

You need to show you can understand the meaning of a range of spoken material, including speeches, radio broadcasts and interviews.

  • Speaking (Paper 5) 15 minutes (aprox)
