Birmingham is unusual among big city universities in Britain in that it is sited on a superb parkland campus. This means that students enjoy the best of both worlds - a self-contained and beautifully landscaped campus, and the convenience of being close to the city centre.

Birmingham is a cosmopolitan and vibrant city ideally placed for travel in and out of the UK. Just 2 hours from London by train and 30 minutes from the international airport, Birmingham has excellent access to the UK’s road and rail network, making it ideal for days out to explore the UK or to visit friends at other universities.

The Edgbaston campus is within easy reach of the city’s highlights. The University train station is right on the doorstep and one stop from the city centre.

Nearby Places to Visit

Birmingham is near the open countryside of Warwickshire, Staffordshire and Derbyshire or Stratford-upon-Avon, where the Royal Shakespeare Company stages plays regularly. Warwick and Kenilworth Castles are well-known landmarks and for those who like the great outdoors, Coombe Park and the expanses of Cannock Chase are easily accessible.

The beautiful towns of the Cotswolds are ideal for day trips, as are Bath and Cheltenham. Smaller villages like Painswick, Biddestone, Winchcombe or Woodstock have unspoilt walks and small independent shops.

Located on campus, Birmingham’s student villages are attractive, safe and have excellent transport links. Student mentors are available from the beginning of the semester and throughout to help students to settle in to the University and the city. Student committees in the halls and villages co-ordinate social events, trips and sporting competitions- great opportunities to make friends and acclimatise to your surroundings!

The University of Birmingham guarantees university accommodation for students participating in the Study Abroad Programme. Living in university accommodation is an ideal way to meet other students, both from the UK and overseas, and to get involved in a wide range of social activities.

You will receive an accommodation application form when you are sent an acceptance letter for the Study Abroad Programme. This accommodation form should be returned to the Study Abroad Office as soon as possible.

Staff at the University of Birmingham aim to support their students as well as academically challenge them. Personal tutors and central support staff are trained to give guidance and support to students who need it. The University offers a wide range of services to meet the individual needs of all students.

St Francis Hall, the University chaplaincy, offers a place where students of all faiths can meet for worship. There are chaplains representing different Christian denominations, Judaism, Islam, Buddhism and other faiths.

The Student’s Guild provides services such as the Advice and Representation Centre (ARC), student mentors, Niteline and Involve (University’s volunteering scheme) to support students throughout their time at Birmingham and onwards.

The Guild also operates the Job Zone to assist students in locating part-time and vacation work. Around nine out of ten students find paid work during their time at university. The Job Zone advertises vacancies for jobs in bars, shops, restaurants, community care, IT, languages and within the University itself.

Volunteering

Birmingham students have the opportunity to get involved in over 40 student-led or partnership projects, such as helping refugee children to develop reading skills or working with young homeless people. Students can also volunteer to work with internationally recognised partners such as the Red Cross and the National Trust.

Clubs and societies

Students can choose to join any of over 200 clubs and societies on offer including a Mexican Society, ranging from debating to hand gliding. Many societies reflect the interests of our international student community,
