British Council UAE
International Young Design Entrepreneur Award

The British Council’s International Young Design Entrepreneur (IYDE) award champions and celebrates the importance of creative entrepreneurs working in the field of design. It is awarded in partnership with 100% Design, London’s international trade fair for furniture and interiors

In 2009 the British Council will present the IYDE award for the fifth time, and this year the UAE will participate in the global search for the brightest and most talented international young design entrepreneur.

IYDE was presented for the first time in 2005, and since then 39 young design entrepreneurs from over 20 countries have so far taken part in the programme, building an active alumni network in the process.

IYDE is distinguished from other design awards because it emphatically recognises the entrepreneurial and leadership ability that bring design to the front of public and business consciousness.

In mid-September 2009, 9 finalists will travel to the UK for a 10 day visit; a tour of the national design industry which will culminate in attending 100% Design (24-27 September) and London Design Festival.

As with previous years, the 2009 programme will be developed with UK partners, and will take the finalists to London and Glasgow to meet leaders of the UK design sector. This year, Belfast is also added to the programme, so the finalists can get a grasp of what’s happening in the Northern Irish design scene.

The programme will comprise visits to designers, design-lead retailers and manufacturers, and institutions active in the procurement of design and architecture; the Design Council, the Design Museum, the University of the Arts London (Enterprise Centres,) The Lighthouse (Scotland’s national centre for architecture and design,) the Glasgow School of Art, and various successful design firms (including Timorous Beasties, SCP, and a private masterclass with leading design entrepreneur – previously Sir Terence Conran, and Tom Dixon.)

The tour will also include elements of the London Design Festival programme – openings, seminars, and events – concluding at 100% Design.

100% Design
100% Design is one of the world's most important contemporary interior design exhibitions presenting the latest in furniture, lighting, and accessories. The fair is the UK's premier contemporary interiors event for the contract market. There is no other show that connects the worlds of architecture and design with innovative, contemporary interior products, creativity and an exciting mix of new and established talent. With Tom Dixon as the newly appointed creative director, 100% Design 2007 was a huge success with over 26,000 trade visitors attending the show.

Participation in 100% Design and their presence at the British Council events and stand will allow them to develop their own network still further and promote their home design scene.

Whilst at 100% Design the finalists will be promoted in a display about the IYDE award and their work at the British Council stand and in a printed brochure to be distributed at the Fair.

All finalists will be given the opportunity to promote a piece of design from their country at the BC stand in 100% Design. All finalists will be asked to choose a design piece from their country not yet available in the UK but that they believe could have a UK and wider international appeal. Experts from our Design team will select several pieces to be presented at our curated stand at 100% Design.

Award ceremony
The IYDE award ceremony will be the culmination of the whole visit – where the winner will be announced and a chance to celebrate all the finalists. It will also be a great networking opportunity for the finalists to meet with key British Council design contacts.

As with last year, the group will also meet and network with the finalists of the British Council’s exciting sister award to IYDE – the UK Young Design Entrepreneur (UKYDE) award 09.

Judging Process
As with the rest of IYCE awards, the winner of IYDE is decided based upon a presentation made by each candidate to an elite judging panel from the UK design industry.

The presentation will be 20 minutes long, containing both written and visual material. Most candidates thus far used PowerPoint to present their work, but it is left to the candidate’s discretion should they choose an alternate format.

The presentation will be followed by a 15 minute question and answer session with the judges.

Broadly, the presentation should include:

background of their national design industry and understanding of current situation/issues within it
description of their own work
how their own work sits in context in the national industry/situation
their wider vision for their own work and domestic design sector – how they are a leader within it
how the IYDE prize would benefit them and their work
inherent within this should be a demonstration of how they successfully marry the commercial and creative aspects or their work – and understanding of business with the creative ability to drive their company forward – to qualify as an ‘international young creative entrepreneur’.

Judging criteria
The participant will be judged both on his/her good ability to present in public and the content of the presentation. The key elements to focus upon are the candidates’ quality, depth, and professionalism.

It is important that the winner does not simply have an impressive CV, but has the qualities and vision to be a potential leader in their national design sector, with an entrepreneurial drive that is tied to a strong creative ability. The winner will be someone who the judges deem able to develop a mutually beneficial culture of both personal and professional engagement, collaboration, and partnership with the UK, and more broadly put the wider international dialogue of IYDE to work.

What will be expected of participants?

Availability to attend an interview with the UAE judging panel, on the last week of July – exact date TBC
Active participation in the UK-tour, including research prior to meetings
20 minute presentation in front of the UK judging panel, followed by Q&A session of 15 minutes
Cooperation with British Council in-country and in the UK throughout the planning process- including provision of information, etc., and the UK visit
A positive, eager attitude throughout the process and the tour

IYDE sector definition
For the purpose of this awards programme we define a creative entrepreneur as follows:

Somebody working in the creative industries who is able to demonstrate business success in the classic terms of business growth (profit, market share, employees) and/or in terms of their reputation (quality and aesthetic) amongst their peers
Somebody working in the creative industries who has developed a successful (in terms of impact and reach) social or not for profit enterprise in this sector
Somebody working in the creative industries who has shown leadership in the industry by championing its development in their country
Somebody working in the creative industries who has developed initiatives (exhibitions, trade fairs etc) that develop and grow the market for a particular creative sector in their country

The IYCE awards are unique in rewarding entrepreneurial ability. We recognise that a finalist may be active in the creative process, but this should be secondary to their focus as an entrepreneur in the promotion of their creative sector in their country. Artistic talent will not be factored into the judging procedure – finalists will be judged solely on the merit of their entrepreneurial abilities in the industry.
