Westside Short Film Festival

July 14 - 15 2006 at Gnien il-Gardjola in Valletta

Westside Short Film Festival, organised in collaboration between Kinemastik, British Council and St. James Cavalier Centre for Creativity, is an open-air event featuring the works of several young international and local film-makers, including Matthew Appelton, Sophie Clements, Russell Weekes and James Caddick from the UK. The Film Festival will be opened by the British performance poet Zena Edwards.

The Festival offers a unique opportunity for local and foreign film-makers and movie-buffs to share ideas and enjoy fringe and experimental cinema.

Tickets (Lm 5 for two days and Lm 3 for one day) are available from St. James Cavalier, Valletta.

Main programme list.

British entries:

Matthew Appleton is a young Royal College of Art graduate who presently resides in London.
Matthew Appleton's documentary “Afterlife” explores the life cycle of electronic goods through focussing on the junk depositories in India and China in a short film that creates both an awareness of the potential for goods' recovery, as well as a deeper ironic reflection on present human condition.

James Caddick is also a graduate of the Royal College of Arts in London.
The intelligent use of stills as a mystifying and alienating effect seems to be a trademark in his work. In Malta, two Caddick’s short films will be shown: “David 39” and “Journey”.

Sophie Clements is a master’s student in communications art and design at the Royal College of Art.
Her interest in moving images came from a desire to combine her two main interests — music and design. As a percussionist, Sophie places great emphasis on the sound and rhythm in her work, and the way they reinforce and interact with each other. In Malta, two short films will be shown: “Kitchen test” and Bicycle Samba”.

Russell Weekes aims to produce an eclectic blend of innovative, diverse, highly dynamic, and genre-defying films.
Witty and creative, Russell Weekes’ films stands out. The attraction of his work is using ordinary objects and giving them life effortlessly.

The Westside Short Film Festival presents two of his short works: “DV tape” and “Twocsinac”.
