TOM CREAN "ANTARCTIC EXPLORER"
Written and performed by Aidan Dooley

Dates: March 30-31 2007 at 20.00
Venue: St. James Cavalier Centre for Creativity (Valletta)

“This one-man show is a genuine small pleasure"

Guardian Unlimited

“This magnetic revelation of a fascinating character, simply compels a standing ovation”

The Irish Times Dublin

Tom Crean, the intrepid Antarctic explorer is brought to life in this dramatic and humorous solo performance by Aidan Dooley, presented by Fairbank Productions and Play On Words Theatre. The show, described as "undoubtedly one of the outstanding performances of the Edinburgh Fringe" (EdinburghGuide.com), is a charming, funny, perfectly pitched account of an ordinary man who helped to turn the wheels of history.

Hear the riveting true stories of Crean's Antractic explorations as one of the few men tp serve with both Scott and Scackleton and survive three famous expeditions: Discovery (1901-1904), Terra Nove (1910-1913) and Edurance (1914-1916).

Crean’s story is a testament of human fortitude against all the elements of Antarctic, his 36 mile, solitary trek to base camp during the Terra Nova expedition to rescue his comrades has been described by Antarctic historians as “the finest feat of individual heroism from the entire age of exploration”.

Dooley presents a grippingly vivid and surprisingly funny account of sheer heroism in the face of impossible odds. This award-winning one man show has toured throughout USA and Ireland and recently won a Fringe First Award at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. The performance forms part of the Valletta Creative Forum: Arts, Heritage and Tourism.

WORKSHOP WITH AIDAN DOOLEY: FROM HISTORY PAGE TO PERFORMANCE

Aidan Dooley will be conducting a two hour workshop on Sunday 1st April. The workshop entitled “creating a one-man show” is aimed at actors who are interested in developing new performance material through a solo show.

Aidan Dooley has worked in the field of Museum Drama for over 17 years, starting off in M.O.M.I (Museum of the Moving Image). He was then involved in the dedicated Museums' Theatre company, 'Spectrum' through the 1990’s. Within this company Aidan created many of the leading roles in the following venues including, The Science Museum (Thomas Crapper ), Imperial War Museum (World War I Soldier), National Maritime Museum (Tom Crean, Tudor Seafarer), The Royal Observatory (Time Traveller), Somerset House (Waterman) Dulwich Picture Gallery (Grand Tourist) and The London Transport Museum (Tunnel Miner). For the past six years Aidan has developed his own company Play On Words Theatre, to provide educational programmes for schools and Museums in the UK.

Aidan will use his work as an example to guide participants through the creative processes required to develop such projects. Prior to the workshop, participants are required to conduct basic research on a character of their choice. This could be done through available scripts, biographies or other historical documentation. The material would be used extensively during the workshop. Participants are required to wear comfortable clothing and are highly encouraged to attend the performance to observe the creative structure.

The workshop will be held at St. James Cavalier from 10 am till noon and is free of charge. For reservations, email euproject@sjcav.org with your details and an artistic CV till Wednesday 28th March.
