LIBRARY SERVICES IN OUR KUALA LUMPUR CENTRE TO CLOSE IN JUNE 2008
We would like to share with you our reasons why and what is happening

We regret to announce that our library section in Kuala Lumpur will close on 1 June 2008.

Our general books are currently being sorted to donate to schools.

Most of our children’s books will be moved to the ELLZ for our Young Learners. If a child is studying English with us, they can use these books any time they are here.

Our Penang centre will maintain its small library.

The discontinuation of our library services in our Kuala Lumpur centre will not affect our English Language Learning Zone (ELLZ), which will continue to operate for the benefit of our students. Most of the children’s books from our library will be transferred to the ELLZ. These books, along with reference materials on English language for Young Learners and Adults, will continue to be available and can be used by our students within the centre.

We will also continue to offer the latest UK magazines for your reading pleasure in our centre throughout 2008.

The decision to discontinue our library services in Kuala Lumpur was taken for three reasons:

  • Malaysians living in the Klang Valley now have wide access to information resources thanks to bigger and better stocked libraries and bookstores, as well as the internet
  • For a number of years, our library here has had a small membership and has maintained only a small number of books compared to other public libraries and bookstores in the city
  • The British Council is dedicating more resources in ongoing and future projects that will deliver more impact to a greater number of Malaysians, such as teacher training, exciting literature programmes, free education counselling services and numerous initiatives in youth development, arts and science throughout the country.

Our centre in Kuala Lumpur will continue to offer English Language teaching, free counselling services on UK education in Malaysia or the UK, as well as provide useful reading materials on UK universities and institutions.

The centre will also provide reference on tourism in the UK, with resources from VisitBritain.
