READ ABOUT IYME 2008
International Young Music Entrepreneur 2009
Here’s the short list (in no particular order) of music entrepreneurs vying to represent Malaysia at IYME finals in London come May.

Yuri Wong
CEO, The Factory Music Studio, Composer, Singer-songwriter
music.thefactory.com.my

© Yuri WongYuri is the founder and owner of The Factory Music Studio which specialises in music/audio production and artiste management. The company utilises computers/web technology to produce quality work at a lower cost compared to traditional recording studios, shifting from a reliance on hardware to software. He wants to promote a wider use of the internet and encourage the adoption of new technology in the production and composition of music, to allow for greater collaborations and efficiency. Aside from his work as a solo artist, Yuri plays the lead guitar for Frequency Cannon. He is also a prolific composer and has written for Malaysian films (Gol & Gincu, Geng: Pengembaraan Bermula, Emperor), TV series, plays, and commercials for Coke, Nike and Astro.

Edwin Raj
TV Producer, Musician
www.homegrown.com.my

© Edwin RajEdwin produces Homegrown on 8TV, one of the few English shows championing local music by highlighting local bands, music and artists. The show is on its third season and is commited to help build a presence for the local Malaysian music scene on terrestrial television. His wants to see a one-stop music complex built in KL, one that provides a platform for the performance, production, and consumption of music. Equipped with proper facilities and linked with the media, Edwin’s vision for the centre would contribute to the development of local music and related content.  Edwin is also the guitarist for local band They Will Kill Us All.

Anthony Yap
Producer/Audio Engineer, Big A Productions
www.bigaproductions.com

© Anthony YapAnthony started his career in music with teaching at The Guitar Store and hasn’t looked back since. He started his own recording studio, Big A Productions, after graduating from the International College Of Music (ICOM), and has worked on many live shows and concerts for both local independent gigs and international acts. Anthony wants to see the Malaysian independent music industry improve in terms of general musicianship, professionalism and overall quality of both live shows and studio recordings. He sees one of the key ways to instigate this is by implementing an agreed upon market rate for people working in the independent music industry and having standard contracts/agreements to bring greater transparency and profesionalism to the industry.

Syed Ahmad Alhadad a.k.a Altimet
Creative Manager, Purplenotez Publishing, A&R Manger, Powder Records, Recording Artist
www.myspace.com/djaltimet

© Syed Ahmad Alhadad a.k.a AltimetAhmad started out in 1999 as of part of Teh Tarik Crew and the A&R Manager of Teh Tarik Records, one of the first independent labels in Malaysia. Now he has his own record label, Powder Records, previously managing Ahli Fiqir, and currently focusing on the distribution and sales of 1 Asia, a compilation of work from 7 Asian countries. With Purplenotez Publishing, he works closely with clients on intellectual awareness rights, helping them track their work and synchronise that with relevant royalty collecting. He feels that the main negative issue in the music industry is the Asian mentality that the arts is not a financially viable career path, starving the industry of both fresh and veteran talent. By providing education and information for new artists and using is own career choices as an example, he hopes to prove otherwise.

What started out as a monthly private party in the middle of the week has now diversified to include a clothing label and spin-off events: LapSap Junkyard Sales, LapSap & Co presents…’. Neither mainstream nor commercial, Blink believes that with LapSap they have created a home for the underground creative community – DJs, musicians, fashion designers, stylists, graphic designers – to channel their respective creative expressions. Blink wants people to know that there is more to music and clubbing scene than just being a DJ – there are economic and creative opportunites waiting to be made and taken.

www.kampany.com

© Genervie Kam Shi LingGenervie is the CEO of The Music Kampany, a company she formed with her siblings in 2006. A year later, they ventured into the world of digital entertainment by collaborating with Wildwave, a leading provider of digital entertainment from Dublin, launching I-AMTV (Independent Asian Music Television) www.i-amtv.com , Asia’s first independent music channel to promote local music.
