Welcome to The British Council! Seeing as you are thinking about joining us, here is some information you might find useful.
If you are looking for information about our other products and services, please see our other brochures or ask one of our Customer Relations Executives.
Where do I buy my books? You will need to buy a set of books. Take your course receipt to the MPH bookshop on Level 2 to buy your books before the start of your first two lessons. Dictionaries and self-study books are also available for sale.
One set of books costs around RM90 and one book is used for one level (that is four to five courses).
Do I get a certificate? Yes, you will get a certificate when you progress and successfully complete a level.
What are the classes like? We provide a variety of carefully planned and fun activities that involve speaking, listening, reading and writing. We use real life tasks to give context to the use of language, develop team work and encourage conversation.
We believe that using technology such as computers and Interactive Whiteboards can help you learn in new, fun and interesting ways. We use technology throughout the courses that we teach, so hopefully you can learn English more effectively in and out of our classrooms.
Our teachers adapt courses to the needs of the class, so please tell your teacher what you want to do with English.
You can watch our classes in action here.
Can you help me get a visa? Yes. Full time students can apply for a student visa with us.
You will need to apply for an Entry Visa from the Malaysian Embassy/Consulate in your country. With that, once you have entered Malaysia, you can speak to our visa officer about the possibility of getting a student visa. Our visa officer is available on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 5.00 – 6.00pm. However, please take note that you may be asked to leave Malaysia and wait in your home country for the approval letter, as that is the rule set by the Malaysian Immigration Department. Please note that all decisions made regarding visa approval are made by the Malaysian Immigration Authority.
Please ask for an application form from our Customer Relations Executives, or download one here.
What’s my next class? Your teacher will recommend the best study path to follow depending on your progress in English. There are no exams for our courses. Your progress will be based on class assessment. Your teacher will provide you with advice on your next class.
What if I miss classes? If you miss a class, we do not offer a replacement class but your teacher can tell you what to do at home. Late arrival and returning late from your break will be noted and may affect your progress to the next level.
If you have a student visa, you MUST attend 80% of all courses. If you are sick, please bring a medical certificate.
When do I register for my next class? Re-registration takes place half way through your course (lesson/week six or seven or lesson thirteen of fourteen for 5 week full time classes). You should get a letter from your teacher with details of your next class.
What are the term dates? January - March April - June July - September October - December
Who can I talk to about my class? If you have any comments or ideas, you can give feedback to your teachers.
You can also e-mail us at kualalumpur@britishcouncil.org.my or speak to one of our Customer Relations Executives. We will listen to you and get back to you.
How can I improve my English?
In addition to your class hours, all students can use the ELLZ to improve your English at no extra cost.
Whether you want to practice listening, reading, writing, speaking or grammar, the ELLZ helps you find useful:
- Computer programmes
- Websites
- Workbook listening files
- Books
- Videos and DVDs
- Cassettes and CDs
The British Council IELTS General and IELTS Academic self study CD-roms provide many practice activities and a great opportunity to watch videos of students taking the speaking exam.

There are also a range of websites that you can use anytime, anywhere, to help you to improve your English.
Try them here.
How do I start using the ELLZ? Go to the library counter with your course receipt, identity card (I.C.) or passport and a letter showing your address (this can be a letter from your hotel). You will then be given a membership card.
When you want to use the ELLZ, bring your membership card to the ELLZ counter. The ELLZ staff will give you a computer number. Find your computer and wait for one minute before you start. We have a study guide for each level and the ELLZ will be happy to show you the resources and answer your questions.
Membership is included in your course fee for the length of your course only. If you pay for the next course before holidays, you can use the ELLZ in between courses.
Your membership card is only valid for registered students. You can lend it to your friends or family.
I didn’t find the answer to my question! No problem – please e-mail us at kualalumpur@britishcouncil.org.my and we will get back to you.
