BRITISH COUNCIL AWARDS FIVE MALAYSIANS IELTS SCHOLARSHIP WORTH US$3,500 EACH For the first time in Malaysia, Five Malaysians who took their IELTS test with the British Council have been awarded The British Council IELTS Scholarship valued at US$17,500 (RM53, 375). The scholarship is awarded for them who are pursuing an undergraduate or a postgraduate programme outside Malaysia to assist them with the tuition fees. |

PREMIER LEAGUE KICKS OFF NEW REFEREEING COURSE 26 July 2011 – The Premier League’s leading international grassroots football project Premier Skills, run in partnership with the British Council, and in exclusive association with Tune Group in Malaysia, launched a new referee development course recently.
This ‘Introduction to Refereeing’ course focused on training 32 new grassroots referees, whose selection was endorsed by the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM). The course took place from 17 July to the 22 July 2022 at Garden International School and was led by Keith Hackett, a former international FIFA referee and previously head of the body responsible for all professional referees in England – the Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL). Keith was joined by Paul Rejer, who is the PGMOL’s Select Group Assistant Referee Manager.
IELTS MADE EASY FOR KDU UNIVERSITY COLLEGE STUDENTS 21 April 2011 – KDU students can now register for the IELTS at Petaling Jaya campus thanks to partnership with the British Council. From May 2011, students at KDU University College (KDU) can register for their IELTS (International English Language Testing System) at the Damansara Jaya campus. This new arrangement will allow candidates to conveniently register, sit for the test and collect their results on campus. Candidates will also be offered an orientation to familiarise themselves with the test prior to taking it.
CONNECTING CLASSROOMS THROUGH COMMERCE 14 April 2011 – Ernst & Young staff invest time and expertise to help Malaysian teachers and students develop into business-savvy global citizens in a unique collaboration with the British Council and Ministry of Education. Ernst & Young Malaysia has joined forces with the British Council and the Ministry of Education to help teachers and students develop entrepreneurial knowledge and skills. “Kids in Business” is a project that will see Ernst & Young staff guide teachers and students in developing, designing, presenting, implementing and evaluation a simple business plan for a product, service or performance within a set timeline and parameters.
PARALYMPIC ATHLETE’S SPIRIT INSPIRES MALAYSIAN TEACHERS AND STUDENTS 24 March 2011 – 12-time Paralympic medallist Marc Woods meets with pupils and teachers as they celebrate success of the International Inspiration programme between UK, Perak and Sabah schools. British athlete and 12-time Paralympic medallist Marc Woods today gave an inspiring talk to 180 pupils and teachers in an event held to mark the success of International Inspiration, the international legacy programme of the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games to inspire young people to play sport.
The programme, run in Malaysia by the British Council in partnership with the Ministry of Education saw schools in Perak and Sabah form partnerships with schools in the UK, with the aim of sharing good practice and taking an innovative approach to the use of Physical Education, sport and play to benefit children, young people and the wider community.
MALAYSIA LOOKS TO UK AS PARTNER IN DEVELOPING HUMAN CAPITAL 22 February 2011 – In Malaysia’s bid to train and develop its existing human resources, the UK is recognised as a partner that can help Malaysians break free from the middle income trap. This was the conclusion from research commissioned by the British Council when its findings were released in early February 2011.
The British Council’s Director of Education and Programmes Peter Clack said that the UK is viewed as leaders in most of the potential growth areas in Malaysia – namely financial services, tourism, engineering, education and health. The UK is also the undisputable leader in research and development.
FIVE IELTS TAKERS TO BE AWARDED BRITISH COUNCIL SCHOLARSHIP 14 February 2011 – Applications now open for Malaysian planning to attend undergraduate or postgraduate programmes outside Malaysia. Scholarships are worth US$3500 (RM10,675) each. Five Malaysians who take their IELTS test with the British Council between now and end July will be awarded with scholarships valued at US$3500 (RM10,675 each). The scholarship is valid for an undergraduate or postgraduate programme outside Malaysia to assist students with their tuition fees. One of the five scholarships will be exclusively awarded to a student who will be applying to a higher education institution in the United States.
BRITISH COUNCIL LAUNCHES LEARN ENGLISH PRONUNCIATION APPS FOR iPADS 17 December 2010 - Teachers and learners of English have now got a new tool to help master the sounds of the English language thanks to the British Council’s latest iPad pronunciation app. Sounds Right is an interactive Learn English pronunciation chart with sounds grouped by vowels, consonants and diphthongs complete with examples of each in use. It is available to download from the iTunes store at http://itunes.com/apps/britishcouncil today for free.
MORE THAN 200 GRAMMAR QUESTIONS FROM THE MALAYSIAN PUBLIC ANSWERED BY THE ENGLISH RESCUE TEAM 15 November 2010 - The special task force comprised of British Council teachers has been helping many Malaysians with their English. Thanks to a special task force comprised of British Council teachers in Kuala Lumpur and Penang known as the English Rescue Team (ERT), more than 200 grammar questions put forth by the Malaysian public have been answered through the ERT website www.englishrescueteam.com
BRITISH COUNCIL CHALLENGES CHILDREN TO READ 13 September 2010 – Students of British Council Malaysia can sign up to take part in the UK’s biggest national reading initiative In an effort to turn children into readers for life, the Summer Reading Challenge (SRC) is back for its 12th year in order to inspire more children to read. Coordinated by the UK’s Reading Agency, the challenge to children is simple; they are encouraged to read six or more books of their choice from the Space Hop collection over the summer. With more than 725,000 children aged 4-11 taking part, the SRC is the biggest national reading initiative in the UK and will see children from 24 countries around the world, including Malaysia, who will be joining the challenge through the British Council.
HELPING MALAYSIANS WITH THEIR ENGLISH 6 July 2010 – British Council Malaysia launches “English Rescue Team” to help public and offers attractive reward for spotting bad English. Malaysians can now ask for free expert advice on their English problems, pick up free tips and materials on learning and teaching English and also win exciting prizes when they spot bad English anywhere in the country thanks to the recent deployment of the English Rescue Team (ERT), a special task force comprised of British Council teachers based in its centres in Kuala Lumpur and Penang, who are armed with the mission to help as many Malaysians as possible with their English.
The team is now offering free advice, giving away prizes, as well as beckoning Malaysians to join in their mission to help raise awareness and improve everybody’s English through its website www.englishrescueteam.com
PREMIER LEAGUE COACHES PROVIDE GUIDANCE ON DEVELOPING INCLUSIVE COMMUNITIES THROUGH FOOTBALL 8 June 2010 – 24 community coaches from Malaysia, South Korea and Vietnam take part in second phase of innovative coaching project Premier Skills run by the Premier League and the British Council in Ho Chi Minh City. The hugely successful international coach development programme Premier Skills launched its Phase 2 training course in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam in May recently. Premier Skills Phase 2 was led by head coach Robbie Earle who is Premier Skills’ highest profile Head Coach and Ambassador. Robbie was joined by Everton’s Johnnie Garside and Tottenham Hotspurs’ Nicholas Phipps. Garside was Head Coach in Korea as well as part of the coaching team in Kerala and Malawi while this was Phipps’ first coaching stint with Premier Skills.
UK TEACHERS FIND INSPIRATION IN SABAH 19 March 2010 – British Council’s International Inspiration programme brings together teachers from the UK with teachers and students in Ranau and Keningau A total of 11 head teachers and physical education (P.E.) teachers from the UK recently completed a five day programme in Sabah that saw them working closely with their counterparts in five local schools. Their visit marked the launch of International Inspiration, a two-year international legacy programme for the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games to inspire young people to play sport. It is led by UK Sport on behalf of the UK government in partnership with the British Council and UNICEF.
BUILDING LINKS BETWEEN PARENTS, TEACHERS AND STUDENTS 8 February 2010 – Pilot project to help parents help their children outside the classroom SRJK (T) Lorong Java recently welcomed dignataries Gerard Lemos, acting chair of the British Council and Dato’ Hajah Noor Rezan bt Bapoo Hashim, Ministry of Education Deputy Director General (Schools Operation) to observe progress of the LearnEnglish Family pilot project, run jointly by the British Council and the Ministry of Education in partnership with HSBC and Scholastic Malaysia.

EMPLOYABILITY OF GRADUATES: HOW DO WE CLOSE THE GAP BETWEEN HIGHER EDUCATION AND BUSINESS? 10 November 2009 - Panel discussion held to commemorate 75th Anniversary of the British Council and 25th Anniversary of the Chevening Scholarship Scheme. To help mark 75 years of the British Council’s work in cultural relations as well as the 25th anniversary of the Chevening Scholarship scheme, a panel discussion was held to examine an issue which is of great importance in this period of economic turbulence – the links between education and business and how those links can be further strengthened for mutual benefit. The panel included Associate Professor Dr Norsaadah Ismail, Director, Industry Relations Division, Ministry of Higher Education; Sir Drummond Bone, Senior Higher Education Advisor and former Vice Chancellor of Liverpool University and Irene M. Dorner, HSBC Bank Malaysia chief executive officer.

The Premier League’s leading international grassroots project Premier Skills, run in partnership with the British Council, was launched in Malaysia recently to great success in helping individuals become multi-skilled community coaches and developing their community leadership.
HELPING MAKE MATHS AND SCIENCE EDUCATION IN ENGLISH A SUCCESS: TEAM TEACHING PILOT PROJECT WELL RECEIVED 19 May 2009 – Ministry in talks to roll out programme of Maths and Science teachers paired with English teachers to develop better teaching skills and improve their English language proficiency to more schools. In line with the Government’s efforts to improve the teaching and learning of Maths and Science in English, a pilot programme pairing Maths and Science teachers with English teachers has received positive feedback. Team Teaching – a pilot programme to support the teaching of Mathematics and Science in English was the result of a collaboration between HSBC Bank Malaysia Berhad, the British Council and the Ministry of Education to develop better teaching skills and improve the English language proficiency of teachers.
