The WORD EXPRESS project

The Word Express project aimed at creating a new network of organisations, magazines, publishers engaged in an ongoing exchange.

PROJECT STAGES

Phase 1
a) Creation of the wider network of organisations, magazines and individuals (authors, translators);
b) Selecting authors and works – poetry, short prose and essays; identifying translators.

Phase 2
a) Translation and editing of selected texts into English – these will be published in the UK in print and online and will serve as source / bridge for translation into languages of the region. Translation will be done via email and in a specially organised workshop.
b) virtual translations workshops to achieve draft translation of the selected texts

Phase 3
a) 3 train journeys through the Balkans to Istanbul. The journeys will take a growing group of authors / translators to cities where they will take part in readings and debates. They will also serve as the final phase of the translation workshops during which the translations will be finalized.
b) The whole group will spend 5 days in Istanbul at the time of the Istanbul Tanpinar Literature Festival and Istanbul Book Fair.
c) The events will be broadcast on the internet to the other participating locations to create a sense of belonging and to reach as wide audiences as possible.

Phase 4
a) Authors participating in the journey produce a piece of writing inspired by it.

Phase 5
a) The texts are circulated and translated.
b) Publication in print and online in all the partners' locations
c) Final event in Istanbul as part of the 2010 European City of Culture
d) Meeting of project participants to evaluate the project and plan further joint activities

Phase 6
a) Produce final publication in English
