Chevening Scholarships in Macedonia
A prestigious award to fund your UK postgraduate studies

The Chevening Scholarship Scheme for the academic year 2009/2010 is now closed. Applicants will be informed of the shortlisting results by mid-November.

What is a Chevening Scholarship?

The Chevening Scholarship Programme is a prestigious awards scheme that funds international postgraduate students who want to study in the UK. Funded by the UK's Foreign and Commonwealth Office, and administered by the British Council, the scheme operates in over 150 countries and annually provides funding for over 2,300 students.

Why should I choose a Chevening Scholarship?

The Chevening scholarship is a prestigious award that gives scholars the chance to experience a world-renowned educational system. In addition, this provides you with the opportunity to experience UK life and meet other Chevening scholars. Once you become a Chevening scholar, you will discover many opportunities to develop your career and become a future leader in your field.

Who can apply?

You can apply for a Chevening scholarship if you are a graduate student who can prove your academic success and who has already begun a career in your chosen field. You'll be expected to show you have at least three years' working experience, with an excellent track record illustrating your achievements, and evidence that you will become a leader in your chosen field.

Chevening scholarships are targeted towards a broad range of fields and disciplines. Priority will be given to the following areas:

Political Science, Government and International Relations
Public Administration and Social Policy
Banking, Finance and Economics
Business and Management (except MBA)
Media and Creative Industries
Social Sciences (including human rights)
Environment Protection and Technology
European Studies

What does the scholarship cover?

The scholarships fund a whole year of postgraduate study in the UK only. This includes:

  a gratis student visa
  all your academic fees
a monthly allowance to cover living expenses
an arrival and departure allowance to help with travel
  a book and clothing allowance
travel costs to and from the UK.

What courses does the scholarship cover?

Most scholarships are for one academic year (9 to 12 months) and are for full-time Master degrees.

Awards will normally be based on a formal programme of study in academic subjects, preferably of relevance to British-Macedonian bilateral relations. Priority sectors may slightly vary each year. Consideration is also given to candidates falling outside the priority sectors.

What are the requirements for applying?

You must be a citizen of the Republic of Macedonia, aged between 24 and 36, with at least 3 years work experience in your chosen career field.

You must have good English language skills. Most UK Higher Education Institutions require a minimum IELTS of 6.5 for admission onto postgraduate courses. An IELTS test will be administered in December 2007 for the shortlisted candidates.

In addition, you are expected to show a commitment to return to Macedonia, where you will contribute to the country's socio-economic development using the new skills and knowledge acquired during your stay in the UK. You will also be expected to show interest in good governance, the media, and the political, diplomatic and commercial interests of Macedonia.

You cannot apply for a scholarship for undergraduate or PhD studies.

What is the procedure for applying?

Applicants from Macedonia can apply online through the new e-Chevening system from 1 to 26 October 2008 (by midnight). The application process for 2009/2010 is now closed.

Please note that all relevant documentation will be requested only from the successful candidates at a later stage. Therefore, please do not submit any supporting documentation during the application period.

Incomplete and late applications will not be considered. Please note that British Council and British Embassy staff cannot discuss with applicants the status of any application or give reasons for rejecting an application at any stage.

We expect 4 to 5 scholarships to be awarded.
