Application procedures vary according to the level of course you choose and the institution you apply to study. It is always a good idea to check directly with the institution of your choice on the latest procedures and entry requirements. Below are some general guidelines.
Although each course of study and institution will have its own language requirement, most pre-University courses generally require IELTS score or equivalent of 4.5 - 5.5, undergraduate courses require scores of 5.5-6.5; postgraduate courses, 6-7 and PhD courses require scores of 6.5-9. If the minimum scores in language proficiency are not achieved, course providers may want you on to enroll on a English language course.
Application procedures for English courses will vary from institution to institution. There are no set deadlines for applications but you may want to apply early to increase your chances of securing a place on the course that you want to attend. You may be coming to the UK to study English in order to meet the entry requirements for another UK course. If this is the case you will want to ensure that you complete your English studies and obtain the qualifications necessary in sufficient time so that you can apply for the next course you plan to take.
If you want to apply to study for a pre-university course such as GCSEs, A-levels, Scottish Highers or a vocational course you will generally find that there is no specified closing date for applications so you can apply at any time during the year. If you are applying for one of these courses you should contact the institutions you wish to study at to find out what their application procedures are.
Detailed information about application procedures for undergraduate courses for international students is available on the UCAS website. UCAS (University & Colleges Admissions Service for the UK) is the organisation that co-ordinates applications for undergraduate courses in the UK and your application to attend an undergraduate course should be submitted through them.
Applications for undergraduate courses have to be received by a specified date. Applications by students of any nationality based in non-European Union countries to Oxford and Cambridge Universities or for dentistry or medicine courses need to be returned by 15 October each year. Applications for all other courses need to be returned to UCAS at any time between 30 September and 30 June. The closing date for all applications from non-European Union students is 30 June.
However, UCAS strongly recommends that you try to complete and submit your application form earlier than 30 June. All European Union and UK students have to return their UCAS application forms by 15 December so UCAS recommends that you should also try to return your application form by this date because:
some universities and colleges will not accept applications after 15 December |
you may miss out on obtaining a place on a popular course if you apply later in the year |
applying early will give you the time you need to make immigration, travel and accommodation arrangements prior to your arrival in the UK. |
