Higher Education in all parts of the world is recognised as both a social and economic need. With the demands for massification coming from both governments and young people (the principal stakeholders) the universities and colleges have expanded beyond recognition of even a decade ago. This has brought demands and pressures requiring more effective leadership and management of the institutions, to improve and restructure governance and to question the traditions of autonomy, academic freedom and accountability. The issue of resource provision and scarcity of funding has made efficient management a crucial issue.
This presentation will question how these issues have been addressed (both in policy and practice) and tackled globally and particularly in the UK as it may have been influenced and has influenced practices of good governance, leadership and management in higher education.
