TELL ME MORE ABOUT IT

TKT- Teaching Knowledge Test is a new test about teaching English to speakers of other languages. It aims to increase teachers' confidence and enhance job prospects by focusing on the core teaching knowledge needed by teachers of primary, secondary or adult learners, anywhere in the world. This flexible and accessible award will help you to understand:

  • different methodologies for teaching
  • the 'language of teaching'
  • the ways in which resources can be used
  • the key aspects of lesson planning
  • classroom management methods for different needs.
WHO IS TKT FOR?

This test is designed for candidates who meet the following profile:

  • minimum language competence of Cambridge PET level / Council of Europe Framework B1 / IELTS 4
  • non-native or native speakers of English
  • teaching at primary, secondary or tertiary levels
  • those with little or no teaching experience; or more experienced teachers keen to refresh their knowledge.
WHY USE TKT?

You can use TKT to work towards an international initial teaching qualification. This can be used to access further training and enhance career opportunities. TKT’s low cost reduces financial barriers to entry and teachers can choose not to follow a particular course of study before taking the test; they can prepare themselves through their own study, if they prefer.

After taking TKT, teachers who want to develop their knowledge further can progress to Cambridge ESOL's well-established teaching awards, such as ICELT (In-service Certificate in English Language Teaching) and CELTA (Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults)

WHAT DOES TKT INVOLVE?

The TKT syllabus is split into three core modules:

  • Module 1 Language and background to learning and teaching - This module covers knowledge of the terminology used to describe language and language skills.  It also looks at learner characteristics and the range of pedagogic choices available to teachers.
  • Module 2 Planning lessons and using resources for language teaching - This module covers what occurs before specific classroom events – the planning and selection of resources and materials.
  • Module 3 Managing the teaching and learning process - This module looks at the classroom event itself – the language of teachers and learners and the organisation of the classroom.

These modules can all be taken together at the same time, or separately, in any order over a period of time.

Each module has 80 questions and lasts 80 minutes. The modules are supported by a short test, which features simple question formats such as multiple choice, matching and gap filling, rather than lengthy writing tasks. Candidates must select the correct answer and mark this on a computerized answer sheet..
