What are Cambridge ESOL exams?

Cambridge ESOL exams are English language exams for people whose first language is not English. They test how you actually use English to communicate on a day-to-day basis and in real-life situations. Each examination covers the four main language skills: listening, speaking, reading and writing

The examinations are available at five levels, from Elementary to Advanced level.

Key English Test / Key English Test for Schools
KET is an elementary exam which recognises the ability to cope with everyday written and spoken communications at a basic level.
Preliminary English Test / Preliminary English Test for Schools
PET is an intermediate level exam which recognises the ability to cope with everyday written and spoken communications.
First Certificate of English

FCE is an upper-intermediate level exam which recognises the ability to deal confidently with a range of written and spoken communications.

Certificate in Advanced English

CAE is an advanced exam which recognises the ability to communicate with confidence in English and deal with most aspects of everyday life.

Certificate in Proficiency in English
CPE is a very advanced level exam which the ability to use in a wide range of contexts, going beyond a good knowledge of vocabulary and grammar to actually using the language.
CERTIFICATE IN ENGLISH LANGUAGE SKILLS
CELS is designed to assess English language competence through a variety of real life contexts it offers candidates the chance to gain certification for what they can do, without being penalised for what they cannot do.
BUSINESS ENGLISH CERTIFICATE

BEC is designed to assist people who are either preparing for a business career or are already in work. It will help you learn to use English in real world business situations, e.g., Meetings, Presentations, Teleconferences etc.

BUSINESS LANGUAGE TESTING SERVICE
BULATS is a language assessment specifically for the use of companies and organisations which need a reliable way of assessing the language ability of their staff.
Teaching Knowledge Test
Teaching Knowledge Test (TKT) – is a test from Cambridge ESOL about teaching English to speakers of other languages. It aims to increase teachers' confidence and enhance job prospects by focusing on the core teaching knowledge needed by teachers of primary, secondary or adult learners, anywhere in the world.
International Legal English Certificate
International Legal English Certificate (ILEC) – is for both employers and lawyers. It is also suitable for law students intending to follow courses which include a significant English language content.
International Certificate in Financial English
International Certificate in Financial English (ICFE) – is for helping finance professionals demonstrate that they have the financial English skills needed in their profession. The University of Cambridge ESOL Examinations and ACCA (the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants) have combined to develop the International Certificate in Financial English (Cambridge ICFE).
