Why study with the British Council?

What courses are available?

Our General English courses develop all four skills (reading, writing, listening and speaking) and give you a thorough understanding of grammar.  Our practical, hands-on approach helps you use the language from the very first day. After your placement test, we will advise you on the best course for your level.

ELEMENTARY 1, 2 AND 3

You will

practise English in everyday situations (asking for & giving personal details, exchanging information, social English)
understand basic English grammar (talking about the past, the present & the future)
read and write simple messages, short descriptions & texts
understand simple information (announcements, instructions, and directions)
know your strengths & weaknesses as a learner.

PRE-INTERMEDIATE 1, 2 AND 3

You will

practise and improve your English for various situations
get a broader understanding of English grammar
increase your vocabulary
write longer notes, letters, descriptions and texts
read and understand real English texts
increase your fluency and your ability to explain your ideas
know your strengths & weaknesses as a learner

INTERMEDIATE 1, 2 AND 3

You will

develop the knowledge you already have to communicate more accurately and appropriately
understand English tenses better
understand how English can be used formally and informally
increase your vocabulary and understand word formation better
write longer texts in different styles
improve your listening and speaking abilities
be able to communicate with more confidence and effectiveness in every day situations
know your strengths & weaknesses as a learner

UPPER-INTERMEDIATE 1, 2 AND 3

You will

improve your knowledge of English grammar and the tense system
increase your vocabulary and improve your understanding of word formation
read and understand longer, authentic texts with a greater understanding of style and appropriacy
improve your listening for overall understanding and for specific points
improve your spoken communication skills
be aware of how different styles of English may be used in different situations

PRE-ADVANCED 1, 2 AND 3

You will

extend your accuracy and fluency in using advanced grammar and tenses
increase your vocabulary at an advanced level (synonyms, collocations etc.)
be confident in speaking and writing in a variety of styles and situations
read and interpret advanced texts
be able to write texts in a range of styles and with suitable appropriacy
fine-tune your communication skills

General English courses cost LBP 590,000 per course. We also offer specialised courses to help you prepare for exams or improve your speaking/writing skills – please contact us to find out more about these.

We attempt to cater for students with specific needs wherever possible, for example by providing coursebooks in Braille. Please contact us if you would like more information about this.
