Did you think our beaches were all dirty?

The holiday issue

People sometimes think the only choice of holiday we have is to go abroad, or to endure a miserable two weeks in the rain in a run-down seaside resort. They're wrong, though. The UK has some fantastic holiday destinations, with lots to see and do. We take a look at 6 different places and different types of holiday.

All of the articles except 'Newcastle by Day' and 'The Peaceful Peaks' having accompanying activities to help you practise your English.

A series of photos illustrating aspects of how and where we holiday.
Blackpool
We take a look at Blackpool, and see how it has changed recently.  The town is trying to re-invent itself as a kind of Las Vegas by the sea, to stay up to date with what we want from a holiday resort.
Craster and clean beaches

Why go to a remote village, with no night-clubs or cinemas?  We take a look at Craster, in the north-east of England to find out why.  We also take a trip to the beach, to see what people do on our beaches these days.
Newcastle by day

It might surprise you to learn that Newcastle is one of the best-loved tourist destinations in the UK.  The city is famous for its art, shopping and friendly atmosphere.  It just proves, you don't have to go to London to enjoy UK city life.

Newcastle by night

Newcastle has a very cosmopolitan nightlife.  The streets are crowded with people partying and having a good time.  The night isn't just about drinking though - there are friends to meet, music to dance to and good times to be had.
the peaceful Peaks
Many people go to Castleton in the Peak District for a nice day out.  There are lots of interesting things to do, such as visiting the castle, and looking at the beautiful countryside.  You can even go down an old flooded mine.
Extreme sports

We take a look at the Peak District.  We don't need to go abroad to see beautiful countryside, for a lot of us, it's almost on our doorstep.  The countryside's not just filled with walkers, either; adventure sports have never been more popular.
