History
The history of space exploration has been marred by a number of tragedies that resulted in the deaths of the astronauts or ground crew. As of 2004, in-flight accidents had killed 18 astronauts, training accidents had claimed at least 11 astronauts and launchpad accidents had killed at least 70 ground crew. Only the crew of Soyuz 11 died in space. About 2% of the manned launch/reentry attempts have killed their crew, with Soyuz and the Shuttle having almost the same death rates. Except for the X-15 (which is a suborbital rocket plane), other launchers have not launched sufficiently often for reasonable safety comparisons to be made. For example, it seems likely that Apollo would have eventually had a similar fatality rate if the program had continued to the present day. About 4% to 5% of the people that have been launched have died doing so (because astronauts often launch more than once). As of November 2004, 439 individuals have flown on spaceflights: Russia/Soviet Union (96), USA (277), others (66). Twenty-two have died while in a spacecraft: Apollo 1 (3), Soyuz 1 (1), X-15-3(1), Soyuz 11 (3), Challenger (7), Columbia (7).

Person
Sergey Pavlovich Korolyov: (December 30, 1906 – January 14, 1966), also known as Sergey or Sergei Korolev, was the head Soviet rocket engineer and designer during the Space Race between the United States and the Soviet Union in the 1950s and 1960s. Unlike his counterpart in America, Wernher von Braun, Korolev's pivotal role in the Soviet space program was kept a closely-guarded secret until after his death. Throughout his period of work on the program he was known only as the "Chief Designer". His legacy includes both the R7 and Soyuz - which remain in service to this day. He was the mastermind behind the first satellite, first mammal in orbit and first spacewalk.

Numbers
Astronomers from the Caltech (USA), using the Hubble Space Telescope and the Keck Observatory, have discovered a small and compact system of stars around 2,000 light years across, with a redshift of 7.0. This corresponds to a distance of around 13 billion light years away, making them the most distant objects yet discovered.

Thing
Space shuttle toilet: each Space Shuttle has a toilet that can be used by both men and women. Designed to be as much as possible like those on Earth, the units use flowing air instead of water to move waste through the system. Solid wastes are compressed and stored on-board, and then removed after landing. Waste water is vented to space, although future systems may recycle it. The air is filtered to remove odour and bacteria and then returned to the cabin. It features a cylinder system where a plastic bag is placed in the toilet before use. The bag is then sealed and is forced to the bottom of the cylinder after each use by a plunger attached to a lever. A new bag is then placed in the toilet for the next astronaut. When the cylinder is filled, it is replaced by a new cylinder.

Recipe
Spaghetti with Meat Sauce Space Meal
This space meal includes a mouth-watering Italian-style tomato sauce, accompanied by tender pasta and accented with chunks of beef. Just add hot water, stir, and your meal is ready to serve. Freeze-dried foods like this are eaten by astronauts under weightlessness conditions in space. Originally developed for the early Apollo missions, food is frozen to -40 degrees F (-40 degrees C) and then vacuum dried and placed in a special foil pouch. This product is manufactured by the same company that supplies freeze-dried foods to NASA for Space Shuttle missions.

Record
Shortest Manned Spaceflight: The shortest manned spaceflight was made by Cdr Alan Bartlett Shepard (born 1923), USN aboard Mercury-Redstone 3 on May 5, 1961. His sub-orbital mission lasted 15 mins 28 secs. The rocket was not powerful enough to reach orbit, instead it went up and down in an arc trajectory, like a cannonball.
