Jacques-Yves Cousteau (11 June 1910 – 25 June 1997) was a French naval officer, explorer, ecologist, filmmaker, scientist, photographer and researcher who studied the sea and all forms of life in water. He co-developed the aqua-lung, pioneered marine conservation and was a member of the Académie française. Cousteau was born in Saint-André-de-Cubzac, Gironde, to Daniel and Élisabeth Cousteau. He is generally known in France as le commandant Cousteau ("Commander Cousteau"). Worldwide, he was commonly known as Jacques Cousteau or Captain Cousteau.

The Old Man and the Sea is a novella by Ernest Hemingway written in Cuba in 1951 and published in 1952. It was the last major work of fiction to be produced by Hemingway and published in his lifetime. One of his most famous works, it centers upon an aging Cuban fisherman who struggles with a giant marlin far out in the Gulf Stream. Though it has been the subject of disparate criticism, it is noteworthy in twentieth century fiction and in Hemingway's canon, reaffirming his worldwide literary prominence and significant in his selection for the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1954.

Most dangerous jellyfish: The beautiful but deadly sea wasp or box jellyfish (Chironex fleckeri) is by far the most dangerous jellyfish and, indeed, probably the most venomous animal in the world. Found in the near-shore waters of northern Australia and parts of south-east Asia, its bell can be as large as a football and it may have as many as 60 stinging tentacles each up to 4.6 metres long. Millions of stinging capsules cover the tentacles and discharge venom into the skin of any creature that touches them; other capsules produce a sticky substance to ensure that the tentacles stick to the victim. It takes approximately 3 metres (10 feet) of tentacle to deliver a fatal dose of venom to a human, but the pain of the sting from just a couple of centimetres is normally instant and has often been described as unbearable. In the past century, the box jellyfish’s cardio toxic venom has caused the deaths of at least 70 people in Australia alone – more than the combined toll taken in the same region by sharks and crocodiles – and some of the victims have died within 4 minutes of being stung. A large box jellyfish has enough venom to kill no fewer than 60 adults but, fortunately, an anti-venom was developed in 1970 and this has reduced the number of deaths.
