October 22, 1926: Harry Houdini was performing in Montreal when a young man walked in and asked if he could punch him in the stomach to see how strong his muscles were. Before Houdini could tighten his stomach the young man began to punch. Houdini died nine days later of peritonitis resulting from appendicitis.
