The two princesses had been returning to Monaco from the royal retreat at Roc Agel in France when their car had plunged off a winding mountain road (while still in French territory), apparently after Princess Grace had become incapacitated by the haemorrhage. Princess Stephanie (17) was initially thought to have sustained only cuts and bruises in the crash but was later found to have a spinal injury requiring extensive hospital treatment.

Born in the United States in 1929, Miss Grace Kelly had enjoyed a short but successful career as a Hollywood film actress in the early 1950s before marrying Prince Rainier (the head of Monaco's ancient Grimaldi dynasty) in April 1956 at the age of 26. The couple had three children, namely Princess Caroline in 1957, Prince Albert (the heir apparent) in 1958 and Princess Stephanie in 1965.

Princess Grace was buried in the Grimaldi family vault on Sept. 18 after a requiem mass in Monaco's St Nicholas Cathedral. The 400 guests at the service included representatives of foreign governments and of present and past European royal houses, as well as several veteran US film stars. (Le Monde -Times - Guardian)
