Linking to LearnEnglish
We often get asked questions about learning English. If your question is not answered here, then please contact us.
Will you link to me?
You will notice that we often link to sites as part of our weekly theme(s) - although the British Council is not responsible for the content of those sites. However, many website owners ask if we will put a permanent link to their sites on LearnEnglish. Although we appreciate the hard work you put in to your site, we are unable to do this due to our current linking policy. We normally have to say no to these requests as a link may be seen by some to count as some form of British Council 'recommendation'. We hope that you will understand that, as the British Council also functions as an accrediting body, this brings about certain restrictions.
Can I link to you?

We always appreciate people linking to us. We hope that, as a free-to-air site, we can provide everyone with the opportunity of practising their English wherever they are. We ask sites that link to us to follow two simple requests:

1) That the text of link is one of the following:

www.britishcouncil.org/learnenglish/central

www.britishcouncil.org/learnenglish/kids

www.learnenglish.org.uk/militaryenglish

2) That the link does not make our site appear within your frameset or look as if it is part of your site. We would prefer you to make the link open in a new window, if possible.

3) If you are linking to a page on the 'old site', that you make sure that our menu appears alongside the page you link to. Unfortunately, this means using the workaround described in the following question.

How do I link to you?

We are currently in the process of redesigning LearnEnglish. But with over a thousand pages, this migration will take some time. For the time being, some of our content will be on the 'new' site, and some on the 'old' (green) site. To link to pages on the 'new' site, please follow the procedure in the previous question. To can link to pages on the 'old' site, though sooner or later these will be migrated and therefore disappear. If you wish to link to the 'old' site, please follow the procedure below:

LearnEnglish was originally designed using framesets. We are hoping to move away from this in the near future, because using a frameset means you can't link to an individual page.

We have tried to make linking to the week's new content easier by creating special framesets (although these may need 'refreshing' to see the new content).

However, if you want to link to an individual page, here is a workaround

Right-click on the right-hand side of the page you want to link to, and choose 'Properties'

Look at the url, which will be something like:

http://www.learnenglish.org.uk/magazine/magazine_home_dinosaurs.html

Copy the end of the url - the part after

http://www.learnenglish.org.uk/…

In this case

magazine/magazine_home_dinosaurs.html

Paste this onto the end of one of these strings, depending on the site you want to link to:

For LearnEnglish Central:

http://www.learnenglish.org.uk/mframe.html?menu=menu/main/menu.html&content=

For LearnEnglish Kids:

http://www.learnenglish.org.uk/kframe.html?menu=menu/kids/menu.html&content=

For LearnEnglish Military

http://www.learnenglish.org.uk/mzframe.html?menu=menu/militaryenglish/menu.html&content=

So, for LearnEnglish Central, this will give you something like:

http://www.learnenglish.org.uk/mframe.html?menu=menu/main/menu.html&content=

magazine/magazine_home_dinosaurs.html

Not very elegant, but this will link to the page and keep the menu visible

what is the situation with regard to copyright?
