The project was initiated to continue the inclusive education work that the British Council and the Education Development Centre have carried out over last four years.

The aim of the project is to embody the values of inclusive society in Latvian schools, to diminish discrimination and intolerance as well as to promote the collaboration and understanding between different social groups in Latvia’s institutions of education and in the society.

To secure long-term support for inclusive education in Latvian schools the Index for Inclusion developed by the Centre for Studies on Inclusive Education (UK) will be piloted and approbated in 25 schools that have actively participated in previous British Council inclusive education activities.

In addition to that a network of consultants will be created to become “critical friends” and help schools with introduction of the Index for Inclusion.

Recently a three-day seminar took place in Sigulda. It was led by UK expert Maggie Balshaw who taught how best use the Index and how to introduce it in schools.

In the following months participants will try it out in their schools and meet to share their experience.

The project is being implemented in cooperation with the Education Development Centre and the Agency for Quality Assessment of General Education at the Ministry of Education and Science of Latvia.
