The British Council organises around 2,800 posts for language assistants and it is not possible to organise an induction course for every assistant. However, if a national course (i.e. for your language) is not arranged for you, it may be possible to attend one locally.
If a course is arranged for you locally, you will be sent an invitation by the Local Education Authority (England and Wales), Scottish Local Authority (Scotland) or Library Board (Northern Ireland). If you do not receive an invitation, ask at your school.
All assistants in Northern Ireland are invited to meetings in Belfast in September.
FRENCH
There will be 9 one-day induction courses in October and November organised jointly by the British Council and French Embassy for French Language Assistants appointed in England and Wales. We will e-mail you in September to give you details of the course in your region.
Meetings will be arranged at the Alliance Française in Glasgow and the French Institute in Edinburgh at the beginning of October for assistants from all French-speaking countries placed in Scotland.
GERMAN

The dates for the London courses which will be held at the British Council this year are:
Friday 30th September, Wednesday 5th October or Monday 10th October.
The dates for the courses held at the Goethe Institut in Manchester are:
Monday 10th October (for assistants based in the North West of England)
Tuesday 11th October (for assistants based in the North East of England)
A meeting will be arranged at the Goethe Institut in Glasgow towards the beginning of October for assistants from all German-speaking countries placed in Scotland.
SPANISH

ITALIAN
There is no national course for Italian language assistants. You should try to attend a general course for language assistants in your area.
A meeting will be arranged at the Italian Consulate General in Edinburgh at the beginning of October for assistants from Italy placed in Scotland.
CHINESE
The British Council arranges an induction course for language assistants on arrival from China from Wednesday 07 September to Friday 09 September 2011 at the British Council office in London.

Chinese assistants allocated to Scotland will receive half of the induction in London and will then travel up to the British Council office in Edinburgh to finish their training.
