Football Culture T-shirt © British Council Korea

What David Beckham Means to…

There is a footballer named David Robert Joseph Beckham. He is a great footballer with a good many of(1) trophies but his fame is never restricted as(2) a football genius; he is also one of the most handsome athletes in the world. However, in fact, how he looks is not very important to me, because I am a blind guy.

I lost my eyesight through a car accident when I was six years old. However, I truly(3) enjoyed playing football with my twin brother and friends as ordinary boys do. Such love for football often led to me staying up all night watching European football matches, when I first met(4) David Beckham.

In 2000 England crashed out of [](5) European Championships at the group stage, but I saw everything about what(6) people call precision, exquisiteness, and elegance in Beckham. His cross(7) and runs remind me of a well-disciplined cook who serves delicious and highly nutritious meals without artificial flavourings. His well-known free kick against Greece showed what his presence means to his country. After all, Beckham means more than a great footballer to me(8).

He is a symbol of 'hope' to me. He tells(9) us through his whole career that if we cherish hope inside us and keep trying, we finally will succeed in our lives. Beckham often says 'never say never' during his interviews. It sometimes sounds as if he's saying [](10) to me. Although he stepped down as England captain, Beckham is still my spiritual captain.

The news that David Beckham won’t win his hundredth cap in Capello’s debut as England manager should not unduly disappoint his legion Asian followers: he has often countered adversity. Personally, I don’t doubt he will become the fifth Englishman to reach a ton sometime soon.

Supporting Liverpool, of course, I initially hated Beckham – from debuting for Manchester United at 17, and his first title in 1996, he helped the big money club to too much success (ten years, nine major trophies). His famous falling out with Alex Ferguson, however, increased his appeal, while his dignity in overcoming a nightmare World Cup ‘98 demonstrated growing maturity. He became crucial to the national set-up, and Captain of my country; that deserved support. A trade-mark equaliser against Greece booked England’s place at Korea-Japan 2002 (and my first flight to Asia), becoming folkloric.

Beckham’s 2003 move to Real Madrid allowed many to forgive his prior convictions with United, and follow that rare commodity, an Englishman playing well overseas. Although never matching Real’s Scouser Steve McManaman (four seasons, two titles, two Champions Leagues), his four year quest for an elusive Spanish championship became an increasingly gripping soap opera, climaxing last July as Real won La Liga in the last half-hour.

Now with LA Galaxy, and possibly appearing against FC Seoul next month, the media’s ongoing obsession illustrates Beckham’s continued iconic status. Welcome to Korea.
