International Writer Fellow 2006

Archie Markham was the 2006 British Council International Writer Fellow at Trinity College. Archie’s busy residency at Trinity began in October 2006 and he spent three (cold!) months living in the beautiful surroundings of Front Square in Trinity, hosting a weekly workshop with the MA in Creative Writing students and generally soaking up the atmosphere of life in the capital city. He also did several readings whilst he was in Dublin and received a rapturous reception from hundreds of avid readers from South County Dublin at their annual Readers Day event, hosted by South Dublin Libraries.

Rethinking the City: Towards Zero Carbon Cities

Stavros Dimas, EU Environment commissioner has said "If we look at the big picture the most serious global threat that we are facing is climate change…..The challenges are considerable but the policy tools and the technologies are already available to move to a low carbon future. There are cost-effective solutions if we act now".

Following quickly on the heels of BC’s successful Climate Change exhibition, NSEW, last November, BC Ireland renewed its acquaintance with the Cultivate Centre when we co-hosted a full day conference on Rethinking the City on 22 June 2006. People from a variety of backgrounds shared experience and opinions on implementing sustainable development initiatives for the cities of tomorrow.

Superstrings

Brian Foster is professor of Experimental Physics at Oxford. He is also an accomplished violinist. Jack Liebeck is a young solo violinist from the UK with a long list of credits and performances to his name. He is also keen on all kinds of scientific invention. If you add Einstein to the mix you begin to see how Superstrings evolved.

In partnership with the RDS, the University of Limerick and the Institute of Physics in Ireland, and as part of Science Week, we were delighted to welcome Superstrings to Ireland.

Anne Maguire Journalism Conference 2006
We renewed our partnership once again with Co-operation Ireland in the organisation of this year’s Anne Maguire Journalism Conference. Initiated by Co-operation Ireland in 1999 to honour the memory of Anne Maguire, a young, talented journalist who through her work, displayed a remarkable empathy for all traditions in Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland, thereby winning the respect of politicians and community activists, this annual conference brought together final year journalism students from Universities and Colleges, North & South, to debate issues of importance to their chosen profession.
Britain and Ireland: Lives Entwined II

Minister of Foreign Affairs Dermot Ahern launched ‘Britain & Ireland: Lives Entwined II’ a new book of essays that explores the complex relationship between Britain and Ireland. Commissioned by the British Council, Britain and Ireland: Lives Entwined II is a follow up to last year’s successful volume of the same name, and the 2004 report Through Irish Eyes that explored attitudes to the UK among young Irish people.

Visual Arts Showcase, Liverpool 17 - 20 Oct 2006
Last October the British Council brought a group of curators and arts professionals on a Visual Arts Showcase as part of their Creative Networks project. As a curator of mainly film, video and computer based art, this presented a really interesting opportunity for me to experience the broader world of contemporary visual art. The conversations were multilingual, mostly a blend of English, French and Italian, the company was a spectrum of people working at an institutional to a grass roots level within the arts.
