What you need to know before coming to Kosovo

GENERAL INFORMATION
Area: 10.887 km2.
No of inhabitants: over 2,200.000.
The highest mountain: 2.656 m (Albanian Alps, Gjeravica).
Political system: Since 12 of June 1999, Kosovo is governed by the United Nations Interim Administration Mission in Kosovo (UNMIK) with the help of the local Provisional Institutions of Self-Government (PISG), as well as security provided by the NATO-led Kosovo Force (KFOR).
Border crossings: Albania – Vrbnica, Shishtaveci, Oruqusha, Qafa e Prushit, Qafa e Morinës; Macedonia – Hani i Elezit, Globoqica, Restelica; Montenegro - Kulla; Serbia – Merdare, Dheu i Bardhë, Muqibaba, Leposaviq, Zubin Potok.
Airports: airport Prishtina.
National parks: Sharr Mountain, Albanian Alps (Bjeshkët e Nemura), Gërmia.
UNESCO world’s heritage sites: Monastery of Deqan.

CLIMATE
Continental, with warm summers and cold and snowy winters. In summer, temperatures can get as high as 35-40C, while winters can be cold (as low as -15C). Spring and autumn are usually rainy, but it can be sunny and warm until late October.

CAPITAL
Prishtina is the capital city of Kosovo, nestling on the foothills of mountains, with a population of about 600.000. It has a vibrant cultural scene.

LANGUAGE AND ALPHABET
The official language is Albanian, Serbian and English. The official alphabet is Roman alphabet. In large cities a lot of people, especially the young, speak English as a foreign language, although German, French, Turkish and Italian are also used.

CURRENCY
The Euro is the official currency in Kosovo.

TIME ZONE
GMT +1 (always one hour ahead of the UK).

VOLTAGE
220-240V, continental plug (two-pin) is used.

VISAS
Visas are not required to enter Kosovo. You may be required to provide documentary evidence giving a reason for your entry and stay to local authorities when entering Kosovo. A 90-day entry stamp will be issued which is renewable for longer stays.

CAR INSURANCE
European Green Card vehicle insurance is not valid in Kosovo and you should purchase local third party insurance at the border on entry. Where an insurance bureau is unavailable you should purchase insurance from the nearest town at the earliest opportunity.
