The boy stopped laughing and said ‘You’re new, aren’t you?’

“Well yes, I am.” admitted Mary. “And I’m frightened but please don’t tell anyone. I’m Mary. I’ve had such a hard time!”  Mary told the boy everything that had happened to her that night.

“Wow” said the boy. “If you’ve really been to all those scary places with the witches and the wolves and the vampires and the scary forest, how can you say you are frightened of me?”

“You’re right”, said Mary. “I wasn’t scared at all. And you don’t frighten me. Could you help me? Please scream and then I can say I passed my first Halloween haunting.”

“OK”,  said the boy.  “Go outside and I’ll pretend to be asleep.”

The boy lay down and closed his eyes. Mary went out through the wall, came back into the room and moaned the boy woke up and screamed

“AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!  A ghost!”

“Thank you so much” said Mary.  “Now I’m really scary.” She went home to Mum and Dad Ghost. “Mum! Dad! Guess what? I was really scary. I made a boy scream”.

“Well done Mary.” said her Mum. “Now we can call you scary Mary!” So remember the next time you see a ghost she might be as frightened as you. She might be new so smile and say hello. Talk to her!

And on that thought we leave Romania and the wolves and witches, and the vampires and the ghosts, and the mice and the rats, and the spiders and the bats.
